Default NASA warns of Asteroid on course to collide with Earth!!!

News discovered on the Annanova site

Earth is going to be hit by a large Asteroid.

Quote:
Asteroid could hit earth in 2880

Scientists have detected a huge asteroid which is on a collision course with Earth but won't arrive for another 878 years.

The asteroid, more than half a mile in diameter, is similar in size to the one thought to have plunged into the sea off Mexico 65 million years ago, wiping out the dinosaurs.

Jon Giorgini and Steve Ostro of Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory warn the asteroid has a greater chance of hitting earth than any of the other cosmic rocks tracked to date.

They say the encounter will be 'extremely close' with a one in 300 risk of impact.

The warning follows data collected last year when the rock, codenamed Asteroid 1950DA, made its closest approach to earth since it was discovered 52 years ago.

The Times reports astronomers working for Nasa tracked it with the world's largest radar dish at Arecibo in Puerto Rico. They had hoped to prove a scientific point about the value of radar in astronomy but found the asteroid instead.

The results show the spherical rock swinging in and out of the inner solar system with its highly elliptical orbit bringing it ever closer to impact. The asteroid's path leads it directly across the earth's orbit on March 16, 2880.

The paper says the exact behaviour of the asteroid is impossible to predict at such close distances and long timescales. It could narrowly miss the earth, or be captured by its gravity, punch a hole in the atmosphere and crash to earth.

If such a rock landed it could potentially pierce the earth's crust, generate tidal waves and throw vast clouds of dust and debris into the air.

The research team, including scientists from Washington State University and the California Institute of Technology, have posted their results on the internet. A scientific paper is to be published this week.

I wonder when the panic buying will begin

This is a very worrying development, and the Government do not appear to be doing anything about it

Gosh!

Do you think this means that Big Brother 881 will have to be cancelled?

No, it will all be taking place in a self contained biosphere near you, in a galaxy far, far away.

Programme bosses will discuss whether or not to tell the spherists of the destruction of the ancient homeland of their ancestors, long since abandoned to the ravages of time.

This 48th generation reality TV show will have prevailed against the odds, swallowing all competition in it's wake. It will have taken on nuances of every other manifestation of the programme, and will have absorbed much of the culture of the 3rd millenium.

After the first experimental extra- terrestial Big Brother in a primitive lunar outpost in 2036, world governments were quick to recognise the significance of it's success.

As the ozone depleted, and the worlds resources became increasingly unable to sustain human existence, the biosphere colonisation of space increased, using their example. Mankind became accustomed to their new existence, and flourished.

The known universe expanded, and despite the vast expanses of space and the diversity of the people, true harmony and equality were closer than any other time in the history of mankind.

All conflicts are successfully ironed out in the BBsphere, the only surviving theatre of War, in the form of weekly tasks.

Nominated from each colony and selected through fiercely contested application processes, the spherists have become the interplanetary elite. The cycle of selection and competition is carried out every four years, still measured out by the rotation of planets in the old solar system. From within the numbers of this elite, a new leader emerges triumphant.

In the BBSphere, two groups co-exist in parallel, seperate sections. The original significance of much of the ritual has been lost in the mists of time, and it is not known why the two groups are traditionally known as Paulists and Helenites.

At a stage approximately 6 weeks into the proceedings however, the numbers have diminished considerably and the two groups merge.

The last man standing inherits the mantle of Leader of mankind, and immediately begins the process of planning the next BBSphere.

A council of elders is made up of all those who were triumphant in the past. It fulfills two crucial roles:

These sage like beings advise the current leader, and more importantly they are the sacred keepers of the ancient message board.

Only they have access to the sacred writings, which they interpret for mankind.
They chant in a curious and ancient tongue, Unbalevabicule known only to themselves.

It is a peaceful and harmonious world which they look down upon.

In every colony, much is learned by watching

greed, avarice, lust and hate;

patience, kindness, genorosity and love;

all displayed to them in the safety of their own home by the noble BBspherists.

Oh my God, I SO need to go back to work!!!!!!!!!

Hi Flossy.

We don't always talk about BB on here and the whole idea of the general chat section is that we can talk about anything we like.

Sticks started this thread and it is obviously nothing to do with BB, but ROB's brilliant spoof has actually bought it back on topic by talking about the development of BB at the time of the supposed asteroid hit on Earth.

This thread is in the General Chat section, so it is appropriate here to discuss our impending doom.

BTW this is one of my e-mail addresses for my role as Prophet of Doom

Hello Flossy.

I'm sorry you didn't like my little tale posted above.

It was just me going off on one of my rambles. As Lesley and Sticks have pointed out, we talk about all sorts on here, and this is the General Chat section.

I do tend to write a few little tales, and I do get a bit carried away, but mostly they are in ROB's little world, and almost exclusively they are about P&H. We had a long period with no news so I thought it would be nice to imagine.

Soon there will be lots of BB3 stuff, no-one will want to hear about them any more, and I will be back at work next week so not many more stories.

Please don't be put off by me, just ignore all postings with my name on!

P.S. No more please, or I might and I'm only a delicate little

On a more serious note, returning to the topic of this thread !!!!

It has been estimated that the number of people looking for Near Earth Objects that may collide with the Earth, is about the same as the staff complement at a McDonalds store.

Kind of worrying, isn't it

Massive asteroid the size of Texas hurtling our way, do you want fries with that ?
