Why is Tom openly lying about Aaron?

Saying that Aaron is holding a grudge, Aaron clearly isn't holding a grudge, he just senses the dislike the others have for what he did yesterday so he's steering clear of them.

And he did try to talk to Faye, but she ignored him.
