Cheryl Fernandez-Versini has met Simon Cowell for do-or-die talks over her X Factor future.

The singer is in LA and has visited the music mogul several *times to thrash out plans, which could see her quit the show.

Cheryl , 32, is locked in negotiations with Simon but sources close to the star insist she is “keeping her options open”.

One insider said: “It’s a critical time and the talks will be a big factor in determining how the show looks this year.

“Cheryl will be the one who makes the decision on her future – she and Simon are great friends and he’s totally supportive of her decision, *whatever that turns out to be. They’ve got the show’s best interests at heart and aren’t rushing into anything. The talks could continue for some time.”

Cheryl is at a crossroads in her life following her split from husband of 18 months Jean-Bernard. She is dating One Direction’s Liam Payne, 22, and is keen to return to her solo music career.

Simon is also battling it out with producers to get his pal Louis Walsh, 63, back on the show – and if he succeeds Sharon Osbourne is ready to join him.

Simon will hold crunch talks on Tuesday. But if Louis’ return is *scuppered, it is thought Sharon, 63, will reject the chance to take up a judging role on the show again.

“Simon really wants Louis back,” said the source. “He wants his friend back by his side like the good old days. But he’s coming up against resistance from producers.”

Doubt has been cast over whether Louis, who did not judge last season after an 11-year run, would pull in viewers. Questions have also been raised over whether Rita Ora, 25, will return. Bosses want to keep the RIP singer but will not break the bank.

With The Voice, which is moving to ITV, sniffing around for her *services, X Factor may have a fight on its hands. Sources say producers have lined up a possible replacement in former judge Nicole Scherzinger, 37.

“Nicole is seen as an able replacement if Rita drops out,” said the insider.

An X Factor spokesman said no decisions on the panel have been made.

“Simon really wants Louis back,” the source told the Sunday People. “He wants his friend back by his side like the good old days.

“But he’s coming up against resistance from producers, who are less certain about Louis’ return.”

Doubt has been cast on whether Louis, 63, would be a draw for audiences, say insiders.

After carrying out research, it’s claimed X Factor bosses found Louis splits the audience and that some fans do not want to see him return.

The source added: “No decision will be made until Simon has this meeting with a top X Factor official in LA on Tuesday.

“Research has come in showing Louis is a very polarising figure.

“If Louis isn’t back on board, then Sharon won’t be. She likes the idea of the original panel and is very nervous about returning. She will only do so if Louis does too.

“Louis is desperate to get back on X Factor and he’s doing all he can to make it happen.”

Speculation over Louis and Sharon’s future also raises questions over whether Rita Ora, 25, and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, 32, will return.
