I had news about a relative having cancer pretty much everywhere and it’s untreatable. So I was super sad about that, but then my aunt from Baltimore called me so I was really happy.

Yes, I'm in constant contact with MIL through IM. We're a very tech-connected family, especially given the distance.

Thanks for asking, btw, but we are fine... a bit more worried about what it means for B-more.

…I’m so glad that your loved ones are all fine, Maru….I imagine that so many in all parts of the US are watching their screens and holding their breath a bit, while the search in the waters continues for those still not found…and so many services gathering to help in any way they can…

I grew up practically staring at Houston's Ship Channel bridge, so I understand. Of course I crossed it many times probably, and used to listen to the workers and ships sailing by. My house was built higher up, so I could literally watch the boats... and every once in a while a ginormous moon coming out of the horizon. It had its pros. We were very close, maybe a few (several) blocks from the Channel...

Anyway, they had a crash in 2000 and they're still trying to rebuild it and then "fix" the rebuild...

If you love crossing bridges, you'll love this about it:

Quote:
Controversy
The bridge clearance is 135 feet (41 m), which some officials have deemed too low for ships to navigate.[1] By the time the V-struts supporting the mainspan were put in place, the Port of Houston claimed the struts were an even more dangerous hazard to ships that must veer from the middle of the waterway. By some accounts, port officials protested, but TxDoT did not listen to their pleas. The bridge cost TxDoT $19 million in its current configuration; a higher clearance would have cost more, and the agency went on to investigate that ships did not need 120 feet (37 m). This decision proved to be a mistake. Several ships have collided with the bridge over 27 years, but despite this, the bridge only suffered minor damage and was still intact. That all changed in December 2000, when a cargo crane struck the bridge, knocking a hole in the concrete deck and damaging a steel beam. The damage took six weeks to repair, forcing several lanes to be closed in the process.[2] The worst accident, though, happened in May 2001, when a freighter's cargo boom caused severe damage to a girder and put another gaping hole in the span. Several lanes of the bridge were closed for two months while repairs were completed.
TLDR: We really suck at infrastructure and planning.

Yes, I'm feeling most for the families of those involved. It's too sudden a way to lose someone and to think nothing of what they must've went through.

An aside, because of where it is located, I'm sure that it will get rebuilt relatively quickly. Baltimore doesn't care so much about the QoL of its citizens so its less because of that, but that there's an understated massive national interest in that area between govt contractors, the NSA, proximity to DC, the military, etc... they're already talking about getting Congress involved, so no doubt it'll get funded and fixed. Congress moves at a snails pace at getting even basic things done, if at all, so the fact they would move this quickly should tell us something...

Normal procedure for the pilots to see them clear of the port.
The pilots will be familiar with that particular port.

…’still missing..’…’presumed dead’…for a loved one it must be like dying inside again and again until the bodies are recovered and then that takes away the most distant and slim hope they might have still had…

Miguel Luna, from El Salvador, was one of the six people on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed after being hit by a 289m-long cargo ship.

Those missing were reported to be construction workers who were on the bridge fixing potholes. All six worked for Brawner Builders, and are presumed dead by authorities.

Baltimore bridge latest: Follow live updates

A relative of Mr Luna told Sky News they were distraught as they waited for news about him, and said that some members of his family were taken by police to a location in Baltimore where they could be with the other families of the missing.

Jose Campos, a colleague of Mr Luna, also told Sky: "My supervisor called me in the morning and told me they had rescued one of my colleagues but he was in a coma.

"I never imagined something this awful could happen. The path where the boat goes was supposed to be a safe zone."

Ughhhh without sounding racist, I was worried it would be immigrants working on the bridge. We don’t always do the best documenting here, which means that those who are missing may not ever be properly identified.

Maryland is a sanctuary state so I don't think that would be as much of an issue. They give drivers licenses to undocumented and are actively pro-immigrant.

Latest legislation: https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md...rrier-success/

…any updated news, ladies…of any more of the construction workers…?…as Caitlin said, only one has been named so far so maybe there are issues in verifying identification …?…

Baltimore bridge collapse: Second of six missing workers named - as divers search river for bodies

The second missing construction worker who fell into the river as the Baltimore bridge gave way below him has been named as Maynard Sandoval.

The 37-year-old, a father of two, is one of six men on the Francis Scott Key Bridge fixing potholes when it collapsed after being struck by a 289m-long cargo ship - the Dali.

The first missing person identified earlier was Miguel Luna, a 49-year-old father of six, from El Salvador.

Two Guatemalan foreign nationals aged 26 and 35 are also presumed dead, the country's foreign ministry confirmed.

All six who worked for Brawner Builders are presumed to be dead by authorities as divers search the water for bodies, having recovered the black box from the Dali.

He said all the men were migrants from "humble, low-income families" sending money to relatives back home.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore said he spoke to the families of the victims, assuring them since the mission had transitioned from search and rescue to recovery he would "put every possible resource to bring [them] a sense of closure".

Them being Gautemalan is helpful as its more specific. I lived in an area where many do live in. They are very nice people but very standoff ish and private. Much much more so than Hispanics are here (the standoffish part). They are heavily employed there in the service industry. MD is very expensive to live in in most places.

It could also be because of the language barrier. And the media simply being not able to find contacts for them. I would not be surprised if they just don't want their relatives information all over the news. It won't necessarily help them being found any sooner and Baltimore residents are similar to New Yorkers that knowing what has happened, if they see anything out of the ordinary, they will speak up. Baltimore's community is great in that way.

Edit: There is less support locally there for integrating as far as language. Here, there is a big enough community of bilingual businesses and communities alike, its no issue. ESL has always been prominent, but more schools now do some class instruction in Spanish.

Also I hate typing on mobile.

…yeah, I understand everything you’re saying, Maru ….and you’re explaining it all very well regarding the community …I just hope that none remain ‘un-named’ or unknown, I should say…and that all of their relatives are informed so that they’re able to grieve…it’s just layering more sadness and tragedy on, you know…
