Two British friends were banned from entering the US after one mentioned that he would be 'destroying America' in a message on Twitter.

Leigh Van Bryan, 26, and Emily Bunting, 24, were handcuffed and locked up for 12 hours before being sent on a flight home after they arrived at Los Angeles International Airport, the Daily Mail reports.

Bryan, from Coventry, sent a message to a friend on January 16 which read: "Free this week, for quick gossip/prep before I go and destroy America."

On January 3, he had quoted Fox show Family Guy, quipping: "3 weeks today, we're totally in LA p*ssing people off on Hollywood Blvd and diggin' Marilyn Monroe up!"

Bryan's charge sheet read: "During secondary examination Mr Bryan was placed under oath and his sworn statement was taken by CBP Officer Wahmann. Mr Bryan confirmed that he had posted on his Tweeter website account that he was coming to the United States to dig up the grave of Marilyn Monroe.

"Also on his tweeter account Mr Bryan posted that he was coming to destroy America."

Bryan told the newspaper: "The Homeland Security agents were treating me like some kind of terrorist.

"I kept saying they had got the wrong meaning from my tweet but they just told me, 'You've really ******ed up with that tweet, boy'."

Bunting, from Birmingham, said: "They asked why we wanted to destroy America and we tried to explain it meant to get trashed and party.

"I almost burst out laughing when they asked me if I was going to be Leigh's lookout while he dug up Marilyn Monroe. I couldn't believe it because it was a quote from the comedy Family Guy which is an American show."

The pair must now apply for a visa from the US Embassy before attempting to fly to the US again.

Last January, Paul Chambers was arrested for joking that he would blow an airport "sky high" if it was still closed by snow when he intended to travel.

He was later found guilty of sending a grossly offensive message or one of an indecent, obscene or menacing character by means of a public electronic communications network.

Chambers's appeal was rejected before Doncaster Crown Court agreed to a second appeal.

Frequent Twitter user Stephen Fry later said that he was "prepared to go to prison" on behalf of Chambers.

Coming to America is a privilege not a RIGHT for foreigners. I don't know why some people don't realize this. I think it's hilarious that this day and age, someone thinks they could tweet "i'm going to destroy America" and not catch the attention of the CIA. What an idiot.

I know that the CIA is reading this right now just because we are talking about it.

Hello CIA/NSA/DHS.

Yeah, because they really meant it in a literal sense.

I'm going to destroy America in English terms isn't meant in the slightest harmfully. Thought the Crime Intelligence Agency would realise this

But he would get deported anyway, because he had no right to dig up Monroe's grave. I think that's illegal but not sure though.

He wasn't really going to do that, he was quoting a joke from Family Guy

America's security is ridiculously tight, remember when I went there and they asked on a form you had to fill in whether I had ever been a member of the Nazi party 1933-45 :S

all the people saying "land of the free" and "paranoid" i bet yu weren't working at the CIA on 9/11, cause yu know what, they weren't doing this before 9/11, were they? and that's how 9/11 happened.

Id like to see how you'd do yur job if yu worked there, and it was YOUR job to keep this country safe. so keep laughing, but there's a reason it hasn't happened again.

eggasatcly, and we tried to not over react the FIRST time they tried to take down the towers in 1993, and what did we get for responding that way? We got 9/11.

Thank you for proving my point.

But they're too heavy handed. Did they not think to check the context of the tweet? If you're happy about living in what is slowly becoming a policed state, then fine. My opinion is that more American's should be standing up for their rights.

it's not a police state. I live here, and i promise you it's not a police state. For people trying to come in, I understand how it could seem that way, but to be honest, i don't care! i'd rather the DHS get it Wrong 1 million times to prevent the terrorists from getting it RIGHT just once.

This might sound shocking, but i'm perectly fine with all that the US government has done, because i still remember 9/11. It was a big deal. And i couldn't believe that mopre wasn't being done to prevent it from happeneing,

Here's the truth. if the US government was doing what it's doing right now, back on sept. 10th 2011, then 9/11 wouldn't have happened. That's the truth.

Maybe some other horrible event we can't imagine will happen, but another 9/11 cannot happen under the current rules.

there are plenty of places in the world you can go to if you want anarchy. WHo's stopping you from going to those places?

This is a big world, yu don't need anarchy in America, if you want anarchy go find it somewhere else. It's not in short supply.

You don't have a right to expect it here though.

This thread both amazes me and gives me feelings of pity in equal amounts.

I cant imagine living a life where i didnt feel free to travel the world and broaden my mind and knowledge of other cultures but equally i would feel embarrassed if i was forced to lead an insular existence cut off from the rest of the world because thats how the powers that be had painted the rest of the world to be. A threat.

What a shame.

I don't know of any places in the world in anarchy, so I suppose that would be what is stopping me. That and the fact that I don't believe anarchy is ideal - I said I would prefer anarchy over a police state. And don't tell me what rights I should expect - it seems from your posts that I know much more about the world than you do.

9/11 wouldn't have happened in the Bush Administration wasn't in office at the time. Bush wasn't even in office. He was on vacation. A memo stating that bin Laden was planning to attack, just sat there with no one picking up on it. The successor to Clinton was told specifically that the biggest threat to America was bin Laden, and because Clinton was a Democrat, Republicans weren't listening. They threw their entire report out with everything else.

America doesn't have a history of Fascism. You only have to look at the Red Scare. No country is safe from tyranny.
