I watch it every week and was going to make a thread once, wasn't sure it had the support on here though.

Liked that guy from the Huffington Post on tonight's show. UKIP's policies and support from the audience is alarming.

Anyone watch tonight? Owen Jones was on speaking sense as usual, and owning them all...especially Ian Duncan Smith.

Dimbleby got a bit angry at Owen and some heckler in the audience as well. Great show.

I saw Duncan-Smith was on, usually a good reason for me to not watch it. I don't watch it on Thursdays, it is on the BBC Parliament channel at 6pm on a Sunday so I watch it then.
I would imagine Owen Jones would do really well though, he's very matter of fact.

As a political programme, this is really going down the drain. I found little to inspire me or get worked up about tonight really. A poor panel in my view.
Way too much time spent on the press issue too.

Quite surprised Ming Campbell is so sympathetic to Thatcher

But he looked at Labour at that 1978-79 time
which was Under Total Union Mess.

(thats something Jack on here wants back)

joeysteele
12-04-2013, 07:12 AM
No one wants the period 1978/9 back I am sure of that and really it couldn't return because of the laws now banning Union secondary picketing, that was a major part of the problem with strikes.

Just as, and some people seem to forget this one, no one wants the 3 day week, with also the endless power cuts that existed during the Conservative Govt of Ted Heath between 1970 and 1974. The winter of 1973/4 must have been as bad as 1978/9 and that was nothing to do with Labour, it was Ted Heath who failed to settle a deal that had that strike going on and on.

The Unions needed curbing but they acted against both Govts, Conservative and Labour, so it would seem fairly likely they didn't get from Labour what they wanted either when Labour was in Govt.

I groaned when I saw it was Finchley last night, another sort of tribute programme to her.
Ming Campbell had to keep saying he wasn't a supporter of Margaret Thatcher because all he was saying was looking like the opposite.
I found it a rather weak programme really which I expected once I saw where it was from anyway.

The only revealing thing was Ken Clarke stating he was surprised that Parliament had been recalled for the tribute,it was something he said that had never been done before so why was it?

It's saddening to hear all these audience members defending UKIP's corner or admitting they voted for them. Some good points raised by them of course, that it's as a protest vote or because they feel disenchanted, so I understand the reasonings - but that just makes it all the more terrifying.

This was a poor show tonight in my view, David Dimbledy is now really poor too as a chairman,he needs to keep the flow going far better than he does.

What a load of tripe talked from Shirley (I could rarely hold a seat) Williams though, although Harriett Harman wasn't much better.

It is right that Labour needs to say if it will reverse this bedroom charge and indeed look at at many other things as to this Govts. heartless and disastrous welfare reforms too.
They have voted against the reforms in Parliament, from that lead, Labour needs to now state that they will look at all the options again and repeal what they can whatever the situation in 2015.
That would now,I really believe be a vote winner if they started that campaign on all that now.

truly an awful show. who on earth chose these innane questions? the school dinners question was weak and the answers were pathetic. why should multi millionaires get free school dinners anyway? the veil question everyone was too scared to actually say it should not be allowed in many situations, but overall the questions were utterly trivial....what was shirley balbbling about too? you cant have an opinion unless you have children? sounds pretty discriminatory to me....but heyho who cares is sweet little old shirley williams. very ppoor

I agree and particularly as to the veil question.I have said on other threads, I think I should have the absolute right in the UK to see exactly who I am going into shops/stores with and walking the streets with as to all public areas.

It astounds me that people think Shirley Williams is relevant anymore, she was from all I have read an at best only just fair Education secretary, she was a total turncoat and walked out of her party, after she lost her seat however, a couple of years before and when they were consigned to opposition.
She won further seats but failed to hold any and now in my view anyway talks the greatest load of tripe you are likely to hear from a Politician.

Enjoyed too the independence arguments, strong points were made on both sides. I agree however Eddie Reader was annoying and way over the top at times.

Not a great lot to talk about as to it really, it is just really more of the same to come,(if they get the chance that is), and especially for those who have little in the way of wealth, they are going to have to work for a few more years to come earlier than originally planned.

I actually think it is spoiled by David Dimbleby Kizzy a lot too, someone in the audience asks a question, that then gets lost while David D goes off in all directions from the original question asked asking his own agenda of questions.

That is not the function of a chairman to actually almost end up asking more or as many questions as the audience.

You used to always be able to write c ** t (no spaces obviously) without it being filtered like this - ****** (hence six asterisks), or even just the 'n' with an asterisk, but now the filter has been edited to ensure all the letters are filtered

People have been doing that for years, and still do with the f and s words, I obviously disagree with the principle of the filter anyway (as do most people on here) but if we're really going to have one we should at least be able to make a distinction between what words we're actually using, on some occasions it's quite ambiguous and that's just stupid, even just allowing one uncensored letter would solve that

Kizzy

Independent review my arse...
They asked all MPs how much they think they were worth late last year...
Give them the 11%... and take the expenses, and recruiting spouses, and second homes.
Lot's of MPs do have other 'interests' too that provides an income.
I feel that many should be more active than they are currently, and are made to be accountable for failing to deliver on election promises.

LOL what :umm2: I don't think I've mentioned the swear filter in about half a year, you must be thinking of someone else

In fact I didn't even reply to that thread Shaun made on it the other week, so nope, definitely not me

Anyway - ew at that horrible, outdated belief that using profanities somehow voids or reduces any point you have to make, it doesn't. Whether or not someone swears is quite irrelevant to anything at all anywhere ever to be quite honest, they're just words, words that some people choose to be 'offended' by. But I'm not getting into this again, fact of life is that people swear - we're on a forum which centres around a show in which they swear almost all the time and which has bravely aired the c word uncensored in the 9pm hour on a good few occasions this series, yet somehow we need a few asterisks to protect us from a few letters sandwiched together to create oh such awful words

I don't swear all the time, just when it's necessary, to emphasise my point or if I'm excited/angry, or cause I want to. The original point I was making was that if we're going to have a filter, at least let us leave one letter uncensored otherwise you can't tell what word has actually been used and that's just ****ing stupid (irony intended)

marvellous episode. galloway v starkey was awesome. loved the fact they made a total fool out of sexist olympic failure tessa jowell and her illegal female only shortlists....
the lady on the far left the economics professoor was the best of them all though. totall honest smart funny warm intelligent, everything tessa jowell was not. whatever happened to the allegantion that silvio berlusconi sent her and her husnband £350,000 gift? money she claims she hadnt noticed? meanwhile galloway rightly pointed out that if u have women only short lists why not working class only , asian only , disabled only
starkey and galloway also pointed out of the 101 blair babes 98 of them the so called more gentle more peaceful less aggressive gender, 98 of them voted for every one of labours disatsrous wars....a far higher percentage than the male voters
they both righly added thatcher was awful and there have been a sackload of dreadful female politicians such as tessa jowell...and the many women mps who milked the expenses illegaly (as did many men)..the tory made some fair points too, the working times are harder for women with children and could be perhaps be looked at....the behaviour in parliament could be less macho too....

but politics is life, its blood and guts and its 24 hours a day and thats the way of the world...women are not the panacea and the positive discrimination for 50% women is insane and women only shortlists are illegal....by the way mrs jowell if u want parliament to represent UK...why are there only 3 disabled mps? does only 1 in every 220 people have some form of disability? no
also as she preached to the far left or tried to about poor people and poor schools, why mrs jowell did u take tens of billions out of grass roots sport to fund an olympics for the elite? aponsored by coca cola and mcdonalds and david beckham. now grass roots sport struggles all over the UK and parks and playing areas are either closing or are charging to much to the kids and sports clubs

Yeah good show tonight, some lively discussion and some very divergent views, the ex-Kremlin guy was interesting at offering a Russian perspective but naturally didn't have much to contribute after the Ukraine discussion, I quite like Heseltine as well. Didn't like Aaronovitch at all, seems incredibly arrogant

The thing with that anti-immigrant guy was a bit strange, if it's true that he's homeless it's sad really and he shouldn't be jeered out of the room but he was making some wild generalisations

I know, tensions seem to be rising in Barking and Dagenham where there has been a 200% increase in immigrants, I think they were very rude to that homeless man, as Racheal said he came to give his opinion as a resident and was unfairly dismissed as some kind of racist crank :(
The police in the firing line again, on the offensive with them again following 'plebgate' I see?... The police today are totally different from the plod of 21 years ago, and are educated to degree level in the practice and ethics of policing. And it's those higher up in the organisation that are at fault but it's always the one putting themselves at risk day in day out that get the flak.
Rachel Reeves did make some great points, she is such a hands on MP around here and is genuinely interested in her constituents.

Kizzy
07-03-2014, 12:51 AM
I thought the Times guy was a right condescending twat, ' the children of immigrants will be paying your pension'... what?..
Heseltine reverted to the old tory ' shout down the woman' stance when Rachel was having her say which was out of order but she didn't get fazed by him I'm glad to say.

Rachel Reeves is for me a genuinely dedicated politician who also directly answers questions put to her.
She is going to be one of the really great performers I think in the Labour Govt that likely comes in 2015.

I agree she's not animated or full of blarney, I really like that. Her responses are always intelligent and considered but never comes across aloof.

They could also put a gag on Susan Kramer too, it was as if it was her show tonight.

David Dimbleby is really bad on this now I agree. Very poor chairmanship.

I'd like to see Dermot chair this actually when X Factor's over and/or David decides enough is enough, that'd be a good place for him to take the next stage of his career (I could see him replacing Schofe on This Morning also)

I really want him on the panel first though

I saw a bit earlier and someone mentioned policies being made with London in mind rather than the rest of the country (I assume the topic was devolution although I guess it could've just been the economy)

I'm inclined to agree, really...

I know he's the presenter but half the time it's him shouting down anyone trying to put their opinion over on the panel. And if anyone asks a really interesting pertinent question from the audience he straight blanks them! It's really frustrating to watch.

Totally agree, in fact as I have said many times, he asks more questions now than the audience and often not related to the original question put either.

the feminist was a grade A moron......her first contribution when asked about th efarrega debate was .why dont they both pull their trousers down and copare their penises? her second contribution was to wrongly state farrage hates all women? I think she spoke again one more time and of course it was more sexist hateful incoherent gibberish which of course dimbleby and the spineless bbc were too scared to pick her up on

the entire show was simply toothless

Well it looks like David Dimbledy is looking to wind down now, he says the election in 2015 will be the last he presents on the night.

Andrew Neill is someone I don't care a great deal for but he has a good wit and generally in interviews keeps things on topic so he would be good at QT I agree.

Far too much time spent on Europe in the main, it is only an hour programme and all but 20 minutes was taken up with that first issue really.
That is a really bad result from the chairman of this programme.

As is the case when Europe come up I would doubt even with the opportunity to do so, few will be any the wiser that are undecided on the issue as to if it is better to be in or out.

That is why I in no way support a referendum in the near future, everytime there is a chance to rationally debate the issue, it gets lost completely and that is how it would be in any referendum debate too.

Shapps is a massive party stooge even by Question Time standards, Chuka's not that much better
