Sometimes I'm inclined to believe that there could be something, other times I think there is nothingness. We stop thinking and are no more.
I think there is part of me that is scared of death, of being no more, so I allow my mind to imagine an afterlife. A place that we go back to, a place we were before life. And there we can meet those we've lost, and in what seems like an instant those who we've left behind, join us.
But then there is the rational and realistic part of me that knows we as people are no more special than animals or plants, and I've never heard anyone claim that plants go to a better place after their demise.
The whole heaven thing just seems like wishful thinking, it allows us to be alright with the fact of not living fulfilled lives, allows to turn from those in need, cause once there is a heaven, the poor and unfortunate will get their reward there and conveniently the bad people in life will get punished.
too long didn't read, main points

I like to freak myself out sometimes and think of a matrix type situation..where when we die, we are awoken in our real life...all of this life was a dream...
If I think about it for long enough it makes so much sense
No, but with the loss of loved ones in recent years, I do take comfort from thinking that they are still around me in spirit somehow.
My sister was at a really good tarot reader/medium the other night.. some of the things she said actually really got to me. This does make me wonder

I keep an open mind and also have a belief that energy from us goes somewhere.
There's no firm evidence that nothing or something happens so until we die I guess we will never know.
I would like to think some part of us is gathered somewhere joined by the same energies of those connected to us.

Nope, wish I could but I just can't, it's not feasible to me.

No, not as a conscious being with all of my memories from this life. But at least I know that every single atom in my body will continue to exist after i am dead, and some of those atoms might become part of another life form.
but of course no one knows for sure.
I just really hope if there is life after death it's not reincarnation. I really don't wanna be reincarnated in some starving village in China or Africa or something. The chances of being reincarnated to a good family in America or Western Europe seem pretty slim, so reincarnation scares me.
I'd like to, because the thought that there's nothing terrifies me.
Same here, because it seems a bit of a waste if you trudge through life and a short life at that really, many trying to overcome the obstacles for nothing to be there after death. But as much as I want to convince myself there is some sort of higher meaning after death, I just feel more and more that I am deluding myself :(

No, and I don't want to believe it's true either. The idea of billions of years of cloud dwelling ahead of me, fills me with dread rather than hope or expectation.

What about those who believe in reincarnation though? And onto that subject, if we are all to answer for our sins come the day of reckoning, then how does that work if some have had numerous reincarnations? And does it mean they have been to both Heaven and Hell? Just thinking about that does my head in :joker:

Reincarnation is an even more bizarre concept than an afterlife. It's basically an afterlife for those with imaginations that limit them to earth. Doesn't make any sense.
We are our minds, so when we die we get funneled back into some guys/animals testicles waiting to be shot back out into a sperm race we are guaranteed to win. People are perfectly entitled to believe what they like, but I'm entitled to find stupidity stupid.
Reincarnation is one religion, and judgment day is another. The only way the 2 things could ever co-exist is with the fact that 2 incompatible religions are true at the same time.

No as I believe the concept of Heaven and Hell is used to control people's behaviour. I believe in the spiritual aspects where your soul stays in the open is true. The body decomposes and forms the earth.

This. I was scared to death of heaven by the time I was 11. I don't believe in an afterlife, but my family reminds me I'm going to spend eternity in Hell on the daily
