Does anyone know how I can safely produce a loud bang and a bright flash at the same time.
This is for a future presentation to introduce the Big Bang theory. I want to catch the audiance unawares

Is this for a website or not?

It is for a presentation in front of people in what we boffins call in tech speak "The Real World" rather than cyberspace
Let me know if the concept of "The Real World" needs further explanation and I will endevour to try.

That's all very well, Sticks but what if someone in the audience was of a nervous disposition?

Ever heard of

I asked someone about them and they did not seem to think they would be suitable.
I have saved three cracks from crackers, I wondered if I could get some magnesium powder to put on them. I wondered if that would work.
I also have some party poppers, but they seem like damp squibs.
The effect has to be instantaneous for shock value.

I hope this presentation isn't planned for the week beginning 16th January Sticks, the firefighters go back on strike then, and it sounds like you may be needing them!!!!!!!!!!!

I did wonder if I could get a baloon filled with Hydrogen and then burst it with a lighter.
I suspect that would be a tad dangerous.
Meanwhile, anyone got any demonstration experiments where the results are counter intuitive.
The only one I could think of was floating a needle on water, but too many people know that one. :bawling:
