"Big Brother to go back to 'science experiment' roots in bid to save hit show"
Production company Endemol is determined to prove the format shouldn't be ditched when its contract with Channel 5 expires this year.
We told in January how network chiefs are likely to axe it.
Just weeks later Channel 5 chiefs proved we were spot on when they messaged a string of production companies asking for ideas to replace it.
But Big Brother bosses are still convinced they can stave off the axe if they make the next series just like its first run in 2000.
They plan to take it back to its roots as a social experiment rather than as a controversial reality format.
“They have let the desire for drama take away from the science experiment aspect people loved”
BB became a national sensation when it hit our screens, featuring "Nasty" Nick Bateman and eventual winner Craig Phillips.
A show insider said: "The problem is they've had the same producers since the beginning and they have just found themselves in a rut. They have let the desire for drama take away from the science experiment aspect people loved.
"Execs plan to restrict producers from 'over producing' and want to let the characters unfold naturally rather than forcing them to do so with manipulative tasks.
"There will be far fewer tasks this time around. They want it to be a true social experiment because they realise they have lost that element along the way."
Big Brother will air this summer followed by a celeb version - but that could be the end.
Host Emma Willis, 42, has previously admitted that she would like to see the show going back to its roots.
She said: "I would go back to basics. I'd strip it all out and make it like series one and make them bake their own bread, use a mangle and look after chickens in the garden to get their eggs.
"Just get rid of it all…keep the psychological games they put in now, but have it bare bones as in what they get and what they have to live on."

12 initial launch night housemates, only one latecomer and 64 days will make a good series.

There's no way they'd only put 12 HMs in launch night when they've not done it for 14 years

There's nothing wrong with some dramatic and loud personalities in the show, it's just don't constantly focus on them as it makes the show irritating to watch.

Doesn't matter how much they promote it. if it airs the same time as Love Island, they are gonna get lower ratings than last years.

I saw this on Twitter earlier today after more than a year of not caring about Big Brother. Generally, I have a lot of distrust towards the Daily Star, but if this story proves to be true then I will definitely start watching BB again.
I'm not expecting it to be 'realistic' in terms of the first few BB shows, but something like BB6-8 would be a great compromise between the 2 conflicting format ideas and a step away from the Love Island-inspired mess that Big Brother has become can only be seen as a good thing.
Honestly, I can settle for just normal nominations 80 percent of the time and more coverage of the show in general other than just the big dramatic moments.
And I mean I hate to be the one who brings it up, but there's one vital component they need for a back to basics series and I sincerely doubt we're going to get it now.

On Day 1, Deana was randomly selected to enter as the first housemate and Big Brother rewarded her with immunity from the first eviction. In exchange for this reward, she had to nominate three housemates based solely on her first impression of them. She nominated Conor, Victoria, and Lydia.
Sure jan.

You never said what makes BB13 launch twist any worse than the BB4 one? Of course White Room is an inferior twist to the Bedsit, but they're also pretty idea. Personally I think the White Room was a good idea with a ****ty result.
BB13's production was no worse than BB7 onwards on C4 - perhaps better

Well first night nominations was still a fair process of every housemate nominating in the privacy of the diary room.
BB13 picked out Deana (apparently randomly) and put her on the spot to nominate someone (in front of the whole house) because they gave her a funny look, immediately ending that person's BB experience.
So the difference in the old twists and those ones was clearly one remembering the fundamentals of the game, and the other completely ignored them.

So what about kinga getting evicted by Makosi after 3 days and Jonathan by Aisleyne after 5? Are BB6 and 7's productions therefore diabolical?

BB7 had terrible missteps in production in its second half (I don't recall saying it was perfect, maybe the post was deleted?).
But I would say, at the very least Kinga and Jonathan were newbies and also described as having to win their places in the game. They were not housemates.

Indeed, BB7 did have missteps in its production, just as perhaps BB13 did. I believe if you're saying BB13's production was 'diabolical', the only thing that would satisfy such a person would be to return to BB1-4 style which, of course, is unrealistic, and unfair.

How is it unfair?
No, I haven't asked to return to any styles. I think any such attempt would come across as a poor reproduction because they can't even produce their own ideas convincingly.
Returning to those series approach to the game, twists and them being actually equal, fair and consistent is something I would champion. How that is unfair is anyone's guess.
And, no, I'm not referring to BB7 which was around the time the rules started to change dependent on which housemate it affected (Nikki being a prime example).

The BIB is exactly what I meant by 'style'. Expecting to return to those days is 'unfair' because the game has been far removed from that for over a decade now.
What this really comes down to however, is that you believe BB13's production was poor, and I disagree.

It's not though. They can have the game "far removed" from what it was, but make it fair.
Currently, the housemates may nominate, then the producers take a day or two to come up with what "rule" nominations will have that particular week to ensure they get what they want.
If they want to make the nomination rule "anyone who even receives a single nom gets put up for the public vote" then that's fine. But make it so every week, instead of next week it being "all housemates with names beginning with M".
Whatever format or style they want is fine, it just needs to be produced well, consistent and applied fairly, otherwise there's simply no point to it at all.

It's your prerogative to enjoy the crappy produced series.

I very rarely even discuss BB as the last civilian I watched was BB16.
But, hey, if you're just that into my posts, you clearly know better.
Yes, production has been on the slide since BB5 as the producers strive for bigger and bolder (it most certainly not always working) but where you got the impression I want a BB1, chickens and chalkboards I don't know.
Production goes far beyond how the house is decorated.
I'll never be happy with post BB4/5? So how do you explain BB6 being my favourite series? Or BB14 being a twist heavy series that I thoroughly enjoyed despite the atrocious production because I enjoyed the mix of housemates?
Or how suddenly me criticising BB13 suddenly led you to the conclusion I was praising BB7 when I hadn't even mentioned it?
You seem to have just made presumptions on my opinion from the start without me even saying anything.

I think it was because on the face of it, they were doing things more familiar to the BB brand, Emma was Davina 2, live shows improved, editing well it had been worse, and the housemate selection was fairly decent. But in terms of the actual riggage to the format/tampering with noms it was definitely getting worse.

Imo any BB series is only as good as it's Housemates, they can have the best tasks of all time but if the Housemates stink then you've got a terrible year on your hands.
Imo I'd have 14 Housemates and here is my profile of them to see what you think of them.
Men:
1. A Muslim male in his mid 40's who plays on every negative stereotype that is associated with the Islamic Religion.
2. A Retail worker in his early 20's who is really geeky and into his Video Games, Movies, and Comic Books, but also can be a social chameleon and manipulate people to his will.
3. A man in his mid 20's who is really into his Heavy Metal (even down to the way that he dresses) and is unemployed and thinks that working is for "losers" and basically just has a terrible attitude.
4. A man in his late 50's who works as a Teacher at a High School, he hates slackers and believes that everyone should be working as a team to achieve their goals.
5. A camp gay guy in his early 20's similar to Marco from BB5.
6. A guy in his early 30's who works in an Office and has a wife and kids, basically just a normal everyday guy.
7. An 18 year old who is incredibly Sporty and loves to exercise and play competitions.
Women:
1. A woman in her mid 20's who is a BNP supporter.
2. A Muslim woman in her mid 30's who goes away from the stereotypes of an Islamic woman and is instead feisty and incredibly loud to the point of irritating her fellow Housemates.
3. A Girl in her early 20's who just wants to Showmance with a guy, basically the year's dullard.
4. A woman in her early 40's who is an extreme animal rights activist.
5. A woman in her late 20's who works as a Waitress at a Restaurant.
6. A woman in her mid 60's who is a die hard Christian and doesn't accept opposing views.
7. An 18 year old Goth girl who likes to tell Horror stories to people.
Yeah it's a ****ed up BB, but that's how BB is supposed to be.

It was for poor Penny back in 2001 so it most definitely would be now.

I'm not sure back to basics would even work anymore but a few elements need to return as a nod to it

Agreed, honestly I think they should stick with how it was done with CBB21 in January, which was by and large a mix of CH4 & 5 styles. The only thing they'd need to change back from that season, would be showing the best bits after the exit-interview instead of before.

It's weird because at the time of BB14, everyone was raving about how production had stepped up and the show was reverting to its classic ways again, but looking back 14 was the start of the poor producer decisions and rigged tasks
Yeah watching BB14's praise as returning to former glory makes no sense at all
Still Baffles me to this day how 14 is the highest rated CH5 series when 13 was clearly superior in every way

I'm pretty sure you post something similar every year, hence the mention of them casting a BNP supporter when in reality, in 2018, they'd be more likely to find an actual unicorn
