Hopefully this means it’ll be good and back to basics

Big Brother needs to be taken in by Sky or Netflix as they'd be more willing to take BB back to basics I reckon.

At first I thought switching to BBUSA style but the way it's worded makes me think they're axing it.

Well I READ that this year was all about marketing the format to other broadcasters to make it more appealing. That sounds like to me for BB19 they will do anything possible to do what the fans want so it gets a lot of positivity

Really hoping Endemol pull it out the bag this summer, but less funding for the show when there are already cutbacks is definitely NOT the way forward. Have said it before, but it’s time for BB to find a new (digital) home - C5 just isn’t cutting the mustard anymore.

Jodie.

Didn’t Broadcast say that C5 were considering paying less for the show a few months ago? Now it’s true, I’m guessing the other things they’ve said are true (if it stays then civvy will be entirely axed or much shorter again) so I actually hope Endemol dont stay with C5

Good - the show will be back next year
Bad - it's still with a network that doesn't cherish it (they just can't find anything else to replace it)

Sell ha to Netflix, C5 is trash

Here’s the full Broadcast article for anyone who’s interested:

Reality show will not return in its current form, vows Frow

Big Brother will not return to Channel 5 “in its current form”, freeing up a pot of money to pump into the nations and regions, Ben Frow has declared.

Speaking at the inaugural Creative Cities Convention, the director of programmes said audiences should not expect to see the same version of the long-running reality format if it is to stay on C5 after 2018.

C5 has two series of the Initial format left to air this year under its current three-year contract with Endemol Shine, but the parties have yet to agree a future deal.

Frow and Endemol Shine UK chief executive Richard Johnston have been in long-running negotiations about the format’s future, understood to hinge on its £40m-a-year cost.

Frow confirmed that the broadcaster will “not be spending the same amount of money” on the format and said: “The ball is in Endemol Shine’s court”.

C5 currently airs three series of Big Brother a year - one civilian series and two celebrity ones - which occupy 110 primetime hours of its schedule.

One possible outcome is for C5 to commission a reduced order of the format – potentially scaling back the hours to air just the celebrity versions or a shortened run of the civilian series. In 2017, the two versions cumulatively occupied more than 100 of the channel’s key 9pm and 10pm slots.

The programmes chief said money that is freed up from a cheaper Big Brother will benefit regional indies as part of the broadcaster’s push to commission more hours outside of London.

In February, Frow invited indies to pitch successors to the reality show. The Viacom-owned channel anticipates ordering a range of original shows rather than a single like-for-like replacement and is understood to have upped its tariff as part of the potential commissioning surplus.

Any decisions regarding the future of the show will have to be made by late summer if C5 is to maintain its scheduling strategy of airing a celebrity version in January.

Big Brother has suffered a steady decline since it moved to C5 in 2011. January’s celebrity version entertained an average of 2 million (7.7%), down from 2.4 million (9%) the previous year and well below the high of 3.1 million (11.3%) recorded in 2015.

However, the format remains a lynchpin of C5’s schedule, accounting for 20 of the channel’s top 25 most-watched shows of 2017.

Its performance among younger viewers is just as crucial: almost a third of the latest run’s audience were aged 16-34, against an average of 17%, while the series captured more than three times the channel’s usual share of 25-34s.

Endemol is understood to have begun its own contingency planning in the event that C5 retires the series.

The producer is thought to have been approached by several OTT players about the potential for picking up the format, with Netflix known to be seeking its version of a reality show.

I really don't understand if this is good or bad. What does 'in its current form' mean I'm confused

Basically C5 and Ben Frow are calling Endemol's bluff and saying 'we don't like it as it is, either change it or it's a no'

Don't think they're bothered about the format, they want it to change in a way that will save them money (for example axing the normal version)

I feel if It moved to Netflix they would rename it Big Brother World and have contestants from all over the world competing in a US style format.

I doubt this would happen. They'd just restrict the show to the UK region so only we could watch it.

Oh I agree I don't think they care about the format at all (my two comments were separate), but the message is basically 'it's not continuing as it is' and that goes just beyond small production level decisions

They probably want its hours cut significantly

Hmm the US format could be a way of them cutting hours actually as they'd only need to air it a few times a week

It's C5 so we will get an hour of booze filled fun and social game so by time Eviction comes around we have no idea who's aligned and who's going because there was no game talk.

I don't like the American format.. I find it too fake... A bit more like Jerry springer and less like normal people living normally . But i would love to see more Americans in the house... I love the English format series 5-10 but American and English and Australian contestants... I would like them to join or swap at pionts ...

I also think it should not be longer than 50 days.... It gets boring after that but if they have a smaller budged next year... Maybe they should combine the celibrity version with the civilian... So the cilivan runs for 50 days but as the days go on, people get eveticed and the remaining 6-7 cilivans go on to compete against the celibrities...

The fact it's no more than 60 days is one lf the worst parts of the show now.

Pretty sure I read the budget will be alot lower too. I recon it will go geordie shore style with just a normal house somewhere and not the studio we have now.

As for the format itself I have no idea what they could do unless they make it a dating show or something along the lines of love Island. I'm not even kidding I could actually see c5 doing that. Make or break style lol

I’m all here for the idea of a North American format. It could attract more fans of BBUS and BBCAN who don’t watch BBUK...

Though am against the Netflix idea, especially restricting it to the UK.

What about international viewers, me included. :(

Because they were aired on E4...

Plus 9 isn’t a good BBUS season to get new viewers introduced in the format tbh...

Both formats are good and bad in their own ways.

Though I suggest you’d watch the North American format and see if you are interested...

Though my dreams would come true if they brought the Australian format over to the UK...

The US format with British housemates would pull in the ratings.

Maybe 4 and 9 failed because the houseguests were American and the British public just couldn’t connect with them...

Similar shows have been trialled like Survivor and they failed .

When it comes to TV the British are not like other countries they like to feel involved

Maybe the Brazilian format would be good.

It’s a mix of the gameplay aspect (BBUS) and the public vote. (BBUK)

They have HoHs. The HoH chooses one nominee and the house chooses the other nominee by nominating one person.

They also have POV and the public decide who to evict out of the two final nominees...

So it’s the best of both worlds really...
