Matt Cardle: 'One Direction shouldn't have released single before me'

Matt Cardle has admitted he is unhappy that several X Factor finalists have released new material before him

The winner, who releases his single 'Run For Your Life' on October 10, confessed his annoyance that Cher Lloyd and One Direction have topped the charts with 'Swagger Jagger' and 'What Makes You Beautiful' respectively.

"They're competition and it is s**t they got to release before the winner of the actual show," Cardle told the Sunday Mirror. "It's also worrying me that if One Direction decide to get slicker and go for more of an older market, then I'm stuffed too.

"It shouldn't have happened really. Simon's naughty. I just hope I'll be able to cement myself into the charts before that happens. Otherwise I'll be fuming. I can't win unless I have an album that does the talking, and I think it does.

"If I had my album *finished by the time Cher Lloyd and One Direction got their tracks in the charts then I would have been really bothered. But the truth is I wasn't finished. Simon let me go away and co-write the album and work on this as a long-term *project."

Cardle, who recently admitted to taking a gun to school when he was younger, added that he is "desperate" to shake off the X Factor tag but insisted that he wouldn't want to knock the show, saying: "Now it's time to move on and just be me."

Cardle's debut album *Letters is released on October 17.

I really can't stand OD but Matt is coming across really bitter here IMO, the lads have no say in when their single will be released and nor did Cher Lloyd come to that.

Rebecca's bringing out some of her material in November, so will he complain then too?

Its ridiculous that the winners have to wait so long before they can release their stuff :bored:

That said, this sounds a bit like sour grapes at the other 2 doing well...and I liked/like matt.

Don't see what his problem is. This isn't XF were the most popular gets to stay a week longer. Cher fans buy Cher's singles. One Direction fans buy One Directions singles. Just like any other artists in the chart.

If he was that bothered he should have hurried up and finished his album quicker, instead of coincidentally having it ready in time for the XF live shows starting again.

Smithy 25-09-2011 05:56 PM

he's gonna end up flopping regardless, it's not exactly cher or one directions fault

TBH I agree with him that the winner should release there single and album first, but the way his putting himself across sounds like his bitter and his ego has been dented.

It's not up to him when he releases his single, Simon Cowell wanted Cher and 1D to have their singles out first.

I absolutely agree with him, sour grapes or not.

I think Matt could be a 'Steve Brookstein' in the making.

Joelle. 28-09-2011 11:08 PM

He will have a top 5 single at least with Run For Your Life and it will be all downhill from there. Its an awful song and video so it really doesnt deserve to get number 1, but then again neither did Cher or One Direction. It'll probably be just like Steve, Leon, Joe all over again.

Rebecca will probably be the sort of artist that sells loads of albums but not that many singles. Popular but understated. I can see her topping the Album Chart and getting a couple of top 40 singles at least, but I don't really think her style will appeal to the youth of today which primarily shapes the singles chart. I.e. with lots of ****.

As if those little wankers could ever grasp a mature older audience over the age of 14 who have lost their virginity and don't dance around to Justin Bieber constantly.

Nothing to worry about Matt.

Kazanne 28-09-2011 11:22 PM

I think Matt was having a pop at Simon more than Cher and One Direction and I can understand why, it's not rocket science, lol, I am a fan of Matts,he has taken time and not rushed his album wrote a lot of stuff himself and by all accounts it will be well worth waiting for,no one HAS to buy it .It hasn't been released to coincide with the XFactor,we knew months ago it was due for release in October,Good luck to him.

Saph 02-10-2011 07:09 PM

Hope he flops aswell, I always thought he was overrated on the show
