PM Starmer plans 12 new towns in England

[The new towns initiative,
part of Labour’s plans to build 1.5m new homes
in their first term,
comes after years in which England
has built too few houses to meet demand,
but the government is still likely
to face fierce opposition.]

[Up to 12 new towns will be under construction
by the next election after 100 potential locations
in England were identified as part of Keir Starmer’s
promise to deliver the largest
housebuilding program since
the postwar era.

Each new town will have the potential
for at least 10,000 homes with accompanying
infrastructure, as the government promised
to sweep away red tape and overcome
environmental objections to get them built.

Starmer admitted being inspired
by a visit to a housing development
in Cornwall with King Charles on Monday,
saying he was struck by the quality
of the buildings and how it was impossible to
tell which were social homes.]

[Prime Minister Keir Starmer said:

“For far too long, working people graft hard
but are denied the security of owning
their own home.
I know how important it is - our pebble dash
semi meant everything to our family
growing up.
But with a generation of young people
whose dream of homeownership feels
like a distant reality, and record levels
of homelessness,
there’s no shying away from the
housing crisis we have inherited."

“We owe it to those working families
to take urgent action, and that is
what this government is doing.
Our Plan for Change will put builders
not blockers first,
overhaul the broken planning system
and put roofs over the heads of
working families and drive the growth
that will put more money in
people’s pockets."]

All the infrastructure needed for this is going to ruin the rural areas. The environment, what happened to labour caring so much about it

This is badly needed.
The government will find problems though getting through the planning obstacles.

Absolutely however, it's a good plan although very ambitious.
It may prove to be too ambitious.
However it will be interesting to see where this has progressed to over the next 4+ years.

This is the kind of policies I hoped to be seeing from them and therefore easily support it.
It will be more than the Cons managed in their 14 year governing period.
I think however to be fair to the Cons, they got bogged down a lot because of planning obstacles.

So yeah, this is a much better announcement.
No doubt the ever destructive Reform gang though will try to keep dividing the Nation blaming those from other Countries and cultures via their own prejudices for the problem of housing in the first place.
Awful divisive lot IN MY VIEW.
I've no time at all for them.

Rather than support overall the plan and this government's hopeful intention of dealing with the obstructive opposition and planning set up there is at present.
Let's see too, what the Greens say too.

Pretty much.

And whole towns made of new builds? They'll be a wasteland by the time the "young families" are retirement age!

Crimson Dynamo 13-02-2025 08:22 AM

it will never happen lol

total pie in the sky bollocks

bots 13-02-2025 08:53 AM

One giant council estate

smudgie 13-02-2025 09:16 AM

Much better to build a few thousand COUNCIL HOUSES in lots of areas that ordinary people could afford to live in.
Building new estates is not an answer to anything.
Loads of modern new houses being shot up already, ok if you can afford to buy.
Then again, that would actually cost the government money.:fist:

Yes, they always get priority anyway.

I heard this guy on LBC sayng a bloke he knew came over on a boat, illegally, and skipped the UK housing waiting list. And was awarded a plush new flat in Chelsea, free rent. Two bathrooms. Three bedrooms. Just in case he wanted to bring over his family.

No British citizen could ever dream of being so lucky.

This migrant is also on £2,400 benefits per week.

EDIT. PER MONTH

Yes Joey
part of the bigger plan

I do hope they start telling us
the locations soon?

Quantum Boy 13-02-2025 10:23 AM

I don't know what the full details are - it sounds slightly "projects"-y which tends to not look so great after a generation or two... plenty of examples in big US cities from the 20th century (or London, or even Glasgow).

I'd tend to agree that acquiring or building more social housing in already-established towns would be a better option. Although ... there are also plenty of examples of that sort of housing scheme ... most of which in Scotland have already been down the whole pipeline (built -> became extremely rough -> gradually started being bought up -> owners retired and moved on -> all private rentals -> semi-gentrification.

Ex-council houses in some villages go for upwards of £250k :joker:

We wouldn't be having this problem if right-to-buy hadn't been a thing, or had been more restricted :idc:.

This has no real place in a serious discussion honestly.

Oh? Why not? I'm not allowed an opinion? If they hadn't given endless housing hostels and hotels over to migrants we may not have this problem. That's my serious contribution. Don't belittle me.

As we have 300 hotels all over the shop full to the brim with illegal migrants and the taxpayer is paying for their food, accommodation, medical treatment and heating it would seem the logical next step for the government to build houses to put them in as they have no intention of deporting them

The government is also moving residents into large sites and the private rented sector.

And I would add the hotels have to sack all the staff and get new government appointed staff so its a double blow for each community as well as a huge increase in threat level especially for women and girls

It's panicked propaganda, and that is my opinion, I know it's a popular tactic to insist on being entitled to an opinion and then feel affronted when other people have an opinion about that opinion, but ... I also don't care.

The idea that they're building 12 x 10,000 house town "for the immigrants!" is just nonsense. Over 85% of the UK is British-born. It's also not the reality of the "new towns" that already exist - most of them are populated by (in the majority) white British people. The whole UK is not London, and does not have the demographics of the London area.

You think it seems even vaguely proportionate to suggest that they're replacing "300 hotels" with 120,000 houses?

Kate! 13-02-2025 10:53 AM

Well I don't see it is nonsense. I notice you confine yourself to quoting just me and don't bother responding to either of the two posters who've agreed with me?

Any in the north of England would cause the Scottish countryside in the Scottish borders to be ruined by pylons..with no gain to Scottish homes

If you look at the post directly above yours, you will notice that you've noticed incorrectly.

But at least "you don't challenge other members posts" means that, now, "the new towns will be for immigrants" has been relegated to the second-most ludicrous claim made in the thread .

Well, if our foolish countrymen had only had the sense to vote for independence, those pylons would mean £££££ for Scotland because we have a large energy surplus to sell to those little English towns.

As it is of course, they have free reign to just claim all of Scotland's abundant natural resources "for the UK". Shameful.
