They consisted and consist of a large number, around 30 at the start and yes black, mixed race whatever but yes urban. The music is called garage, and what made them so popular (I'm not sure where you got your information) but garage music was not mainstream at the time and they helped to bring it to the popular musical arena.

In my opinion if it wasn't for garage music we wouldn't have grime artists acknowledged today such as n dubz, dizzy rascal, tinie tempah etc. Grime is a progression from garage within uk rap. Whether you like that sort of music or not, it's an achievement to be recognised.
