Scores of deaths in Canada’s Vancouver area are likely linked to a gruelling heatwave, authorities said Tuesday, as the country recorded its highest ever temperature amid scorching conditions that extended to the US Pacific northwest.
At least 134 people have died suddenly since Friday in the Vancouver area, according to figures released by the city police department and the Royal Canadian Mounted police.
The Vancouver Police Department alone said it had responded to more than 65 sudden deaths since Friday, with the vast majority “related to the heat”.
The deaths came as came as Canada set a new all-time high temperature record for a third day in a row Tuesday, reaching 49.5 degrees Celsius (121 Fahrenheit) in Lytton in British Columbia, about 250km (155 miles) east of Vancouver.

“Vancouver has never experienced heat like this, and sadly dozens of people are dying because of it,” police sergeant Steve Addison said.

Other local municipalities have said they too have responded to many sudden death calls, but have yet to release tolls.
Climate change is causing record-setting temperatures to become more frequent. Globally, the decade to 2019 was the hottest recorded, and the five hottest years have all occurred within the last five years.



The scorching heat stretching from the US state of Oregon to Canada’s Arctic territories has been blamed on a high-pressure ridge trapping warm air in the region.
Temperatures in the US Pacific northwest cities of Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington reached levels not seen since record-keeping began in the 1940s: 46 degrees in Portland and 42 degrees in Seattle, according to the National Weather Service.

This would probably be a normal temperature for some countries though.

40s in America is quite normal?

But maybe because they're not use to it.

Global warming is causing hotter summers and worse winters.

Not in our lifetime or our children's lifetimes, but we're heading for extinction.

It's alright taxing the people, but airplanes are one major cause. What are manufacturer's also doing about plastic?

If Canada isn't used to these temperatures there's no point in saying it's hotter in other places. When it snows in the UK the country grinds to a halt because we are not used to it. When it snows in Canada they get out their snow chains because it happens every year.

There's a huge difference between the low 40's and 49.5 though. Once you're up there (into the 50's) people start dying if they don't have regular access to a way to cool down - AC, a swimming pool, the sea, whatever).

Overall I agree though - the world is broken and it's not fixable. We won't see the "end of days" in our lifetime (from that, anyway) but we're talking a couple of centuries left of humanity* and that's it. Too late to slam the brakes now.

The slight hope that remains IMO is that we find a technological solution to restore the balance - which to be fair, isn't beyond possibility. When you consider where we were in 1921 vs where we are now in terms of technology... it's feasible that things will exist by 2121 that we can't even imagine now. Maybe they'll be able to clean the platic out of the ocean in a matter of weeks. Maybe they'll be able to scrub the air. Maybe humanity will **** off into space, who knows.

i think vaccine development has shown what humanity can do when there is a will to do it. We didnt just come up with 1 solution, there was a crate load, so at some point people will wake up to it and do something about it

Yep and you need the infrastructure to cool down. I doubt Canada has it.

Just like we don't if we get snow as someone else pointed out.

And yep, advances in technology could save the day or planet.

Very much a combined effort. No point just raising car taxes because of omissions and trying to go all electric.... it needs a much more holistic approach. Not to even mention electric cars are not currently affordable for your average person or practical.

ive been in the Sahara when it was over 50 and that was pretty hot. I didn't stay long though, 3 days at that temperature would be awful

…I hope Mokka is keeping cool in that intense heat…I can’t understand with those temperatures why all the naked flesh exposed to the rays in the OP on the beaches…I don’t know what the cooling centres are that have opened across some cities…maybe large empty buildings with air conditioning and people are laying on the floor in makeshift beds….maybe Mokka can inform us more….

temps there are low 30s at mo but peaking on Friday at 37C

It hasn't hit my area to hard yet. I think yesterday's high was about 34 today is 35... and it's suppose to increase daily till Friday. We aren't expected to get into the 40s. That being said, I work at a greenhouse so the heat I was working in yesterday was much higher than 40. Normally I could hide in the air conditioned office but we had a tropical order arrive from Miami so it was a hot day for sure.
I don't know what the cooling temperatures on the coast would be, but I did live in BC for 8 years and they are not typically use to those high temperatures. They are more of a rainforest climate so it just doesn't get hot, it gets muggy and hot. We get temps like this every summer in my region. Air conditioning units are in most buildings, but not all homes. Especially not the for low income. But yes, people do flock to the water to cool down. I was hoping to get some paddleboarding in myself this weekend.

…I was reading that there have been almost 500 deaths in the last few days which is almost a 200 per cent increase on previous years and thought to be temperature related…some homes not having ventilation and as you say, no air conditioning….this really is quite literally a good example of earth warming and a heading toward possible future ‘inhuman temperatures’….really scary and awful for those who don’t have any ways of cooling if they’re quite immobile in their homes as well….your paddle boarding sounds fabulous, though…I hope that your weekend is cool and refreshing…(…as much as it can be…)…stay cool……
