has been forced to declare just the
third state of emergency in its history
after being battered by Cyclone Gabrielle.

New Prime Minister Chris Hipkins
said the disaster was the country's
biggest weather event in a century,
leaving a trail of destruction so devastating
that at least 225,000 are without power
and some residents had to swim
to safety from flooded homes.
