An Indiana man who received a pardon from Donald Trump for his participation in the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol was fatally shot by a sherifff’s deputy during a traffic stop on Sunday, according to law enformcement authorities.

Matthew Huttle was killed by a Jasper County deputy “when an altercation took place between the suspect and the officer, which resulted in the officer firing his weapon and fatally wounding the suspect,” the Indiana State Police told The Associated Press.

The stop took place around 4:15 p.m. near the Pulaski County line in Indiana on State Road 14. It was not immediately clear why Huttle was pulled over.

“Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased as any loss of life is traumatic to those that were close to Mr. Huttle,” Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson said in a statement to ABC7 Chicago. “I will release the officer’s name once I have approval from the State Police Detectives.”

Huttle, 42, of Hobart, was sentenced to six months in federal prison and a year of supervised released for entering the Capitol for about 10 minutes during the riot, then remaining on Capitol grounds for several hours, Fox 59 reports.

He was released from prison in July 2024, according to federal records.

Huttle, 42, traveled to the Capitol with his uncle Dale Huttle, who later pleaded guilty to January 6-related offenses, after being accused of attacking a police officer with a flagpole bearing an upside-down American flag.

“We ought to bum rush the Capitol building!” he reportedly told his nephew. “Arrest them all. We’ve got enough people to do that.”

Matthew Huttle’s defense attorney claimed his client was not an ideologue, but rather a bystander swept up in the violent events of January 6.

“He is not a true believer in any political cause,” attorney Andrew Hemmer wrote in a court filing about the January 6 case obtained by ABC7. “He instead went to the rally because he thought it would be a historic moment and he had nothing better to do after getting out of jail” for an unrelated offense.

Daniel Charles Ball, of Florida, who was freed from pretrial detention after Trump pardoned him for alleged offenses on January 6, was arrested last week on a federal gun charge.

As The Independent has reported, Trump’s mass pardon of 1,500 January 6 participants, including the leaders of the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys and several who assaulted police officers, has reinvigorated a weakened U.S. militia movement and empowered white supremacists, experts have warned.

Oh dear. Hard to figure out who to blame here really. Do we sympathise with the officer just doing his job, or the poor patriot? I can't figure it out but I've not checked X or 4Chan yet so maybe there will be more clarity from the mob at some point.

Also how could this criminal have been dealt with as there would have been no option to deport him? I guess that's not a problem now, but I have to wonder. It's a bit of a weird situation when there's a criminal with a criminal record but they're not an illegal immigrant it's a tough quandry, usually the criminals are from ElseWhere.

Sorry edited the above to remove the part about his criminal record. Trump pardoned him so he was innocent. All very confusing and worrying.

Yes, unfortunately a lot of them are not very bright and are confusing their pardon for the Jan 6th insurrection with some sort of president-granted legal immunity. So a bunch of them are going to end up back in jail. Or shot, 'cos it's America.

that cop has every right to defend himself honestly, since there was an altercation between the two of them, so this was very likely self-defense

I was trying to find his criminal record before January 6th because that would've been more predictive of the future. The irony is his dad was a police officer. Usually people who pick up traffic offenses like candy are people who really don't like authority.

The 42-year-old — who was born in Porter, Indiana, to a police officer father, graduated from Merrillville High School and lived in various states — worked much of his adult life as a journeyman carpenter and has two surviving children, according to Hemmer.

Huttle struggled for more than two decades with alcoholism, fueling legal and health problems, but stopped drinking in 2019, his attorney said.

"Much of Matt’s criminal history and many of the problems in his life in general are directly related to his extreme alcohol abuse," Hemmer said.

Huttle was sentenced in 2010 to two-and-a-half years in prison for battery after severely beating the neck, back and buttocks of a three-year-old child in Lake County, according to the Indiana Department of Correction.

Records show he was on probation in Porter County for a 2020 felony drunk driving conviction when he traveled to Washington, D.C., and unlawfully entered the U.S. Capitol.

At the time of his death, Huttle also was awaiting sentencing in Lake County on a felony charge of operating a vehicle as a habitual traffic offender, according to court records.

When doing the search, his background check page address came up as living in "Gaslite Park" in Indiana (it's a mobile home lot). It was just too ironic not to post.

They should though; when the pardons were being handed out, it shouldn't have been a sweeping catch-all, they should have considered the past character of the people being pardoned.

I can actually see a decent argument for pardoning the otherwise-OK people who had no violent criminal record and just got caught up in some hysteria on Jan 6th. But it should only have been for those people of otherwise good character. Not people with previous jail time for beating up three-year-olds.

He got out last summer but I genuinely think if the pardon hadn't happened he might not be dead. It will almost certainly have emboldened him in resisting arrest - believing "the govt. and Daddy Trump are on my side!".
Maybe it would even have been true if he'd ended up in a legal process. Doesn't really matter if you get shot before making it to a cell though.

If they'd been in jail/prison for years at a time I think they've served enough time for Jan 6th by itself. If the system had been fair, then the other history should've been considered and there would been sentencing guidelines based on those conditions. The problem is they kept some of the people in apparently without trial. And if they had sentenced them fairly based on the facts, many of them would've long been out and the truly criminal ones would've had their facts examined (like this guy) and sentenced more appropriately... but the Federal govt can set whatever standard it wants, so it's not the same as a local case. So I'm glad to see those courts politically shellacked for once because it happens too often. Though honestly no telling though if it gets better or not under future administrations, because the courts at that level are still too heavily politicized (either direction). One administration is not going to fix that.

Compared to to the years and years dished out to the uk counterparts..
