I dated/was on-off with a Lithuanian girl for a while, she was one of the most interesting people I've met but also a little crazy. I learned a lot about their culture though and the challenges of coming to the UK as an eastern European migrant with no real skills or knowledge of the country

Also went on a couple of dates with a Nigerian girl who was lovely but also came on very strong and I did a runner from that

Oh and also had a date a couple of months ago with a girl from Bangladesh who was also very nice but only in the country temporarily. From an Islamic background too so that would never really have worked but again interesting to spend time with someone from a very different background

I think it's hard to form a relationship with a person from a very different cultural background, as in a romantic relationship. I think for a relationship to work long term you really need to have similar core values, way of living, goals etc

Yeah as a general rule I think you're right, it can make it harder to relate to each other

It also doesn't matter so much when you're young but I think as people get older they also like bring closer to their family and that brings challenges if you're in a country very far removed from all your relatives

Agreed

I once dated a girl from Falkirk but I just could not get used her eating with her
hands, open fire in her caravan, and all the genetic mutations in the extended
family which played havoc at Christmas

It just did not work

To be fair she did have a beautiful blue sparkling eye

…I think that might be true and apply in some cases …like for instances, big age differences can also cause issues potentially but can also work absolutely fine…as in other things…I come from a family which has much multi culture of different faiths and values etc and some relationships that have shown strength over decades…that might not be every experience but it’s not a one size fits all or fits most, either…I know that’s not what is being suggested but similar core values can be very much held while the practises of them have differed quite a bit in upbringing etc….

Often opposites do attract but as the years go by those differences that once were novel and interesting become the very things that begin to tear you apart

Well I think it can still work ,but you both have to have respect for eachother. And a understanding for each others believes . And like you say .. having similar values helps aswell.

I always laugh & roll my eyes when I watch 90 day fiancé,the amount of couples on that show ( I know some of it will be edited& scripted for dramatic effect)...but still the amount of couples who 1. Don't bother to learn or research about the person's culture , country or beliefs...or if they do it's usually just an outline, but they have zero comprehension...of what that will actually mean ,in terms of the family & the traditions and customs... just to name a few .

2. They are too lazy to learn the person's language,so instead rely heavily on a translator app . Yet they're supposed to be spending the rest of their lives with this person....but they can't even communicate properly with them .

3. Usually the westerners are also a little ignorant and rude and disrespectful , or they come across that way...due to the culture shock of being so out of their comfort zone,in a different country with entirely different cuisine and way of life . They still think a place thousands of miles away is meant to mirror America lol.

I dated an American when I was working over there and dated an Australian here - he was the professional at my brother's cricket club so was just a summer fling as he went back to Oz after the season.

I've had none of the above.

So my first will be interesting whenever that day comes, I hope that she's not a Miss Alabama 2024 or a Love Island contestant.

Yes I was with a gorgeous Persian - he hated being called Iranian for 2 years and we split up because he went to study Architecture in London (he is now an architect ) and still in London. His mother was a nightmare . A lovely , lovely chap.

To be fair I think this is becoming less important over time, I actually often find it fascinating just how many cultural/childhood experiences I have in common with people from all over the place these days. Obviously there are always little twists and quirks but the world is so interconnected now, a lot of culture is decentralised, it's not so much pocketed by location as it obviously would have been in the past.

I guess to put it in shorter terms...

I generally find I have far more in common, and far more to talk about, with people around my age (let's say 35 to 45) from [wherever in the world] than I do with your average British Boomer.

No, it can be hard for certain cultures to mix, relationships are hard enough with adding in very diverse cultural difference generally speaking
