The latest quake, near the fracking site in Preston New Road, Lancs, measured 0.76 on the Richter Scale. An earthquake of 0.5 has the TNT equivalent of 5.6kg — or a large hand grenade. Anti-frackers claim pollution from drilling shale gas includes cancer-causing chemicals. And people living near fracking sites often panic about the increase in tremors. Protesters chained themselves to equipment at the site last week and others took to Twitter to to speak-out against fracking. One said: “Great to see such potent community resistance against this disgusting industry.” “Recent events have galvanised so many people to stand up against fracking!” added another. Energy firm Cuadrilla started drilling for shale gas last week, but the company called their second halt to proceedings in a week due to the “micro seismic event”. But it said the quake was “way below anything that would be felt at the surface”. They stopped after 11.30am this morning after the tremor was detected on the grounds. Cuadrilla confirmed operations would stop for at least 18 hours following the micro seismic event. Cuadrilla said in a statement: "A micro seismic event of 0.76ML (local magnitude) was detected just after 11.30am this morning at Cuadrilla's shale gas exploration site. Daily Star

[Cuadrilla has been forced to suspend fracking at their Lancashire site after a 0.8 magnitude earthquake was recorded.
The British Geological Survey recorded the quake at around 11.30am today. In a statement, Cuadrilla's spokesperson confirmed: "Cuadrilla was hydraulically fracturing the shale rock adjacent to a horizontal well at the time and the seismicity is classed as a red event in line with the traffic light monitoring system regulated by the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA)." The spokesperson added: "Work will now pause for at least 18 hours and is expected to recommence in the morning."] https://news.sky.com/story/fracking-...quake-11536253 Sign Of The Times Last edited by arista; 26-10-2018 at 04:29 PM. |

There's been another earth tremor at the fracking site at Preston New Road....this one measured 1.1 on the Richter scale.
It was detected at half past eleven at the site on Preston New Road. Cuadrilla has confirmed they were fracking at the time it happened. It's been defined as a red event as part of the traffic light system but the company maintains it's way below anything that can be felt on the surface. Fracking at the site has now been halted for a further 18 hours whilst investigations are carried out. Radio Wave

They need to stop for good before they do serious damage, just one week ago the tremors were as low as 0.4, now they've reached 1.1

I'm all for finding alternative fuels to oil, but what makes them think a method which causes tremors and releases possibly carcinogenic substances is a good idea?

I'm not a fan of fracking but we need to get some perspective. The process itself by its nature causes tremors, but these are deep underground and do not reach the surface. Also the regulations are much tighter in the UK than they are anywhere else in europe, so given that, these red light events will be much more common here than anywhere else.
