Sunak to unveil £2bn home insulation scheme
[Hundreds of thousands of homeowners will receive vouchers of up to £5,000 for energy-saving home improvements, with the poorest getting up to £10,000. Chancellor Rishi Sunak is due to set out a £2bn grant scheme in England for projects such as insulation as part of a wider £3bn plan to cut emissions.] [The Treasury said the grants could help to support more than 100,000 jobs. Labour said renters appeared to be left out and called for a "broader and bigger" plan to cut carbon emissions. Under the Green Homes Grant, the government will pay at least two-thirds of the cost of home improvements that save energy, the Treasury said. The Conservative manifesto had pledged £9.2bn for improving the energy efficiency of low income housing and public buildings. Shadow business secretary Ed Miliband welcomed the plan but stressed that it was not "comprehensive".] https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-53313640 [It was revealed last month that Mr Sunak is considering a temporary VAT cut to get the high street back on its feet - something that's been called for by trade body the British Retail Consortium (BRC). Businesses would also be able to defer their VAT spending for another three months, under the economic blueprint. Some report that a six-month VAT cut could also be on the cards for pubs, restaurants, hotels and other in the hospitality industry. VAT currently stands at 20 per cent.] https://www.thesun.co.uk/money/12041...s-rishi-sunak/ Last edited by arista; 07-07-2020 at 06:34 PM. |

Renters being left out, surely installing insulation is a bigger job than someone can have done to their rental home? Like, having different doors out in, decorators, and gardeners is fine, but structural things should be down to the landlord?

Up to now Sunak is the only one worth listening to.
Let's hope we don't see any reigning in of him by whoever, to a harder, less compassionate line. |

The job placements scheme will be useless as it only serves for free labour for companies with no incentive for them to take on jobseekers beyond their placement and plus jobseekers will inevitably do more work then they are getting paid for on universal credit.
You've also got the issue that such schemes always impede jobseeking efforts as it makes jobseekers less flexible in when they can interview and such and it gives them less time to actually job search. Schemes like these exist only to make employment stats look better as you know they'll count people on these placements as being in work. |

5% VAT on Hot Take Away Food
until Jan. [VAT cut for some sectors from 20% to 5% Sunak says it's important to get the hospitality sector "bustling again" while making sure we "enjoy summer safely". "At the moment, VAT on hospitality and tourism is charged at 20%. So I’ve decided, for the next six months, to cut VAT on food, accommodation and attractions," he adds. "Eat-in or hot takeaway food from restaurants, cafes and pubs, accommodation in hotels, B&Bs, campsites and caravan sites, attractions like cinemas, theme parks and zoos. "All these and more will see VAT reduced, from next Wednesday until January 12th, from 20% to 5%."] Last edited by arista; 08-07-2020 at 12:06 PM. |

£10 per person discount as part of
'Eat Out to Help Out' scheme Sunak says his final measure has "never been tried before in the UK" but that in August, meals eaten at any participating business - from Monday to Wednesday - will be 50% off, up to a maximum discount of £10 per head for everyone, including children. Businesses will need to register, and can do so through a simple website, open next Monday, he adds. Each week in August, businesses can then claim the money back, with the funds in their bank account within five working days.] |

"Poor" and "homeowners" in the same sentence just reveals that they have absolutely no idea about what low income actually means.
News flash tories; the people who need help the most don't own property . |
