It will be interesting but if Labour win this and they are throwing everything at it.
Then it needs to be a really convincing win. |

An excellent result for Labour.
They need though to set out to build on this. There were issues for the SNP as to this seat and it's former MP. I didn't however see this win on this level in a by-election in Scotland. Its stated that it's just under the percentage Labour had in 2010. Of course Labour didn't win the 2010 election. However it's actually a higher percentage than Labour got in 2005 in that seat, the 2005 election was won by Labour with a 68 overall majority across the UK. So a lot to cheer about but a lot of work still to do. Winning a by-election is good, however cementing that win and building on it is something that cannot be let up on. the danger is that it is a very flattering result for labour. Labour piled resources at winning that seat. In a GE they cant replicate that level of intensity across the country. The turnout was 37%, so it's not like voters were engaged in politics after all that effort. Then there was the fact that the SNP incumbent was a disgrace, not all the SNP are that bad.
We don't yet know how much of an influence the new SNP leader was in their downfall or how much the gender argument and corruption played into it |

Labour has the momentum after this.
The result more than confirms a likely 14%+ at least lead in UK national polling. It's true this is a low turnout but all by-elections have much lower turnouts. This swing however was totally unexpected. At this time this is success on a scale not believed even remotely possible after 2019. At THIS time however. What Starmer needs to do is add more passion and action and not just words. If this was a result only of the chaos in the SNP. Then that's going to be so at the general election too as much of there chaos now is not going to disappear in a year or so. Plus the SNP always knew their success was because of disgruntled former Labour voters. Those votes could only in the future return to Labour if the SNP began to fall from grace. However, the SNP chaos is near duplicated in the current Con party too. They've had scandal ridden by- elections with another to come in Tamworth. Now there's a really strong test to Labour in Tamworth. Labour sadly, and I concede this, is not loved or having voters flock to them for its leader or even the vague ideas of policy being talked about with little to no detail attached. Labour's support is more from voters with more compassion wanting to get this rotten Con hard-line heartless government OUT. Hopefully realising the ONLY way to get these Cons out is to vote Labour to be sure of that coming about . Tamworth is the next by-election I want to see, if Labour can win Tamworth or get close to, that will help cement more confidence of good change coming for Labour. However this IS a really great result. Had they just missed winning it, or just won it. Even with the lower turnout, the criticism would be and the news would be of Labour failure. This was a huge swing. This seat had a good Labour MP in Tom Greatrex up to 2015. I wish this new MP good luck to build on his success here in this constituency. |
