I know this thread will inevitably descend into the tired 'IT'S NOT A SOAPBOX FOR THE GAYS' and 'BB IS A REALITY SHOW NOT LGBT QUESTION TIME' but I found this column an enjoyable read so I thought I'd share for those interested in some intellectual social commentary rather than more futile Ann/Shane arguments. It's not often Celebrity Big Brother makes it to the likes of The Guardian, after all. To give them their credit (not often I get to do that!), C5 stuck to their word and provided a thought-provoking series

I think that's exactly what BB should be tbh, they should be talking and debating about issues close to their hearts, that's a social experiment and getting to know the HMs and what they feel strongly about etc etc

honestly one of the reasons why this series wasn't as bad as it could've been since it had a lack of confrontational conflict.
the debates and topics brought up during this series was refreshing and sets it apart from the other CBBs

"I know this thread will inevitably descend into the tired 'IT'S NOT A SOAPBOX FOR THE GAYS' and 'BB IS A REALITY SHOW NOT LGBT QUESTION TIME' "
Not only is that 1. baiting 2. verging on trolling 3. verging on insulting members but its also the way to ruin what could have been a good thread |

I have enjoyed how this series has prompted some..difficult discussions. of course there has been some pretty offensive posts made but I do think on the whole that its been a decent year discussions wise (last few days excluded, as it always gets a bit too mental whehn people start campaigning for their faves ) I think this has been helped by the (seemingly new?) policy of allowing housemates to actually speak their minds on stuff rather than dragging them to the diary room for warnings left right and centre. BB is supposed to be about stuff like this I reckon. A social experiment, as you say. Not a geordie shore-esque cluster**** of drinking and sex and who fancies who rubbish. There is also another really interesting article in the New Statesman called “On Celebrity Big Brother, LGBT+ people are freed from being flawless”
https://www.newstatesman.com/culture...being-flawless It seems like this year’s show has attracted lots of attention from media that would typically ignore the show |

I mean I’ve enjoyed these debates to an extent and they are discussions that should be had but a few people like myself were critiquing the way Shane Jenek went about it

It all rather is clouded by his total acceptance of Andrews rampant misogyny because
"he is fit" how anyone can take him seriously is unfathomable as is how any "community" would wish to represented by him |

I have totally enjoyed this series, mainly due to the fact that we have been witness to some good discussions.
I still believe everybody represents themselves only, good or bad. |

Now this section can be a bit of a mess at times (I am trying to sort it, but it will take time as its gone on for too long and basically crept up on us) but http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/foru...splay.php?f=61 Is generally decent for debating difficult topics. I would say avoid the politics threads though, thats where the bickering and such is the worst. Either way, I have to say you are definitely one of my favourite newer members (biased mod...grr ) and its been a pleasure having you here even if you do decide to disappear after BB. /sucking up |

Brilliant and thought provoking article, thanks for posting it Jack. I think it answers a lot of questions as well that have been quite prevalent on here over the last few weeks. I particularly like how the author addresses the India/Dragphobia situation as I feel like the context behind that was often misunderstood, and the history of trans people's involvement in the movement was very interesting and something I didn't know about. It's also very true that lesbians are often ignored when discussing these things, as well as bisexuals.
