Evolution makes far more sense to me than a man in the sky making us. But i'd be happy to listen to Dave try to explain why he believes that. In fact he expects people to listen to his views, but he doesn't listen to other views himself.
i find far more flaws in creationism than evolution. |

To be honest, I find atheists far more "shouty-downy" than your average Christian. Overly aggressive non-belief is the future. |

Not really what?
I was just stating what I personally have found to be the case. I know Christians - who tend to be quite self-contained generally, they believe what they believe but are quite happy to let other people have their opinions. I also know Agnostics and Atheists, many of whom are incredibly aggressive- produce reams and reams of (often conflicting) scientific theories printed off the internet to prove why they are right to contend that religion is rubbish and simply will never let the matter go. I heard Ricky Gervais and the Archbishop of Canterbury (a strange mix) on the radio a while ago. Ricky Gervais attacked Rowan Williams incessantly and aggressively - shouting things like "Go on then convince me" and Go on then - prove that God exists" and he got more and more annoyed as the Archbishop just smiled and said "Look, you believe what you want - it's fine, you're entitled to that opinion". ps. Oh, and we should respect religions. We should respect everyone's opinion. Last edited by Blueisthecolour; 24-08-2010 at 09:02 AM. |

I am not an athiest. I'm not a Christian either. I find people "of faith" narrow minded, particularly when it comes to creationism v. evolution. Christians (only because we're talking about Christians here, but I mean every Bible-based religion) pick and choose the bits of the Bible they're going to fight about. Yesterday, Dave made it clear he believed that God created man in his image because it says so in the Bible. He also had his hair cut, although it says, quite clearly in the same Bible, that having your hair cut around your temples is punishable by death. You can't pick and choose the bits you want to believe. It's either God's word, or it's not.

Evolution vs creationism is an old favourite of mine to ponder.
NOTHING in science rules out an ultimate creator, per se. Also, M-Theory and its hypothesis of 11 dimensions actually gets past the necessity for there to have to be a beginning of the dimension we know as time. I don't believe evolution and creationism are mutually exclusive; there are as many holes in the science as there are in the religious explanation, and I tend to think that far FROM being exclusive, the two actually complement each other a lot better than they stand as separate theories. |

That was when he said he believes in the virgin Mary myth, but wouldnt trust his daughter if she claimed it? He will argue for the supernatural when it comes to werewolves and flying and all other things of the supernatural, and call others close minded for not agreeing with him, but he definitely would not believe his daughter if she said her pregnancy was immaculate... Quite a double standard.

As all the others in the house are respectful of his beliefs, then I think Dave should be able to listen to another housemate discuss his beliefs on evolution.
The fact that Dave was unable to say to JJ2, well you are entitled to your opinion but I dont personally believe that makes me wonder why Dave was unwilling to discuss this further. Surely if he has built his life on this belief and he is certain beyond a shadow of a doubt then why not discuss it. In my opinion he knows that his beliefs do not stand up to scrutiny and therefore would rather just deny the argument exists and just bury his head deeper into the sand. Dont get me wrong, I am more than happy for him to have his beliefs and to talk about them but I wouldnt put up with him completely disregarding mine because they questioned his. I have yet to have a conversation with someone of any faith who can explain (with any conviction) how the earth is only a couple of thousand years old yet rock, fossils and whole eco systems have been carbon dated to millions of years in the past? How, if we as humans are made in God's image, how we can share DNA with closely related animals like chimpanzees and apes? I am not belittiling anyones faith, I am of the opininon if you believe in some otherwordly deity who is going to listen to your problems, provide solutions etc and it gives you comfort then it is a good thing. When it totally dominates every aspect of your life and stops you questioning things, blindly accepting things because "it is written" then I believe it is dangerous. This kind of religious radicalism is how societies become marginalised and religious wars break out. |

However, I'm not convinced it's because he thinks his beliefs don't stand up but because he thinks they would not be popular with the majority of viewers/HMs. The word 'fake' is used too frequently in relation to BB but if it can be applied to others for minor matters then it should be levelled at Dave on this count. |
