Default Southampton Starbucks : Manager Not Taking Cash :Woman, 55, accused of transphobia

Starbucks are refusing Cash.

Put a Sign Up on your Door

[Woman, 55, accused of transphobia
by raging trans Starbucks manager tells
how row exploded when
she said 'I'm talking to the lady behind the counter'
not knowing the worker didn't identify
as a woman: Friend says she's fled
on holiday 'to recover'
Vanessa Thomas was accused of being
'transphobic' by trans Starbucks worker]

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...word-lady.html

[The woman accused by a
transgender Starbucks worker of being
'transphobic' says the whole row stemmed
from her using the word 'lady' to describe
a member of staff without realising
that they did not 'identify as a woman'.

Vanessa Thomas, 55, was seen on
camera being screamed at by the
trans store manager near the
ferry terminal of Southampton, Hampshire.

Mrs Thomas revealed to family and friends
that she had tried to pay for her coffee
using cash but was informed by a
Starbucks worker that this
would not be possible.

Well it depends on if Vanessa Thomas and the worker have interacted more personally with each other in the past.

I personally don't think that is very likely, but it can't be ruled out.

In what world is it okay to act like that at all, let alone when you're working in a public facing role?

You might be thinking of the actual woman? She doesn't identify as a woman, she uses they/them pronouns I think.

Widespread entitlement, self-centredness and hyperindividualism are (ironically, given that these people are so often described as leftists) the inevitable outcomes of late-stage capitalism and consumerism. These mindsets didn't spring up out of thin air they were cultivated over decades ... just with some unexpected and unintended side effects.

Can't disagree there.

The way you phrased it isn't something about which I know a great deal. I can't really call my self "anti-capitalist", though I'm certainly against mass consumerism.

As you say, it is somewhat ironic that the behavior of self-proclaimed "leftists" are possibly the outcome of a free market, and that they seem incredibly pro-consumerism. The way some of them defend the latest mass-produced product excreted by Disney...

The late 80's, all of the 90's and at least the first half of the 2010's was all about companies, politics, all sorts of people with vested financial interests pushing a narrative to kids and young people of;

"I am the best, I am the most important, I can be whatever I want, I can have whatever I want, I can have it all, the world is mine for the taking!"

And (cynically) that's because it was thought that those people would then be driven to productivity AND excessive spending within the consumer economy.

What they didn't expect but I think was somewhat inevitable, is that the NEXT generation (the ones who were BORN into that narrative) would have it so firmly embedded in their sense of self that they place importance on self/the individual in really extreme and often bizarre ways... and when you boil it right down... it was sparked by a late-stage capitalist idea that "self centred people will want to buy themselves more stuff".

Well put. Like I said it's not something I know a lot about, and I haven't seen the argument expanded like that, only seen end stage capitalism being broadly blamed with no explanation

It used to be a joke/meme that people would write "**** capitalism" on their iPhone and their selfies would have a pile of Amazon boxes in the background, but while I've not seen anything quite as on the nose as that, I've seen things with similar levels of self-awareness.

I don't like Starbucks. I don't agree their coffee is the best, I'd rather support an independent. And I will never use a shop that doesn't accept legal currency.

Yes thiugh, Costa... Unthinkable..

CaffeNero is the best. I love their coffee.

Then why not just explain to the customer ? , the way things are at the moment.... people are getting cancelled left right and centre for just making mistakes.

As I keep saying ,this whole " respect my pronouns" seems to be a one way street. As they can be as abusive and loud and nasty as they way ...even when the person genuinely doesn't know their gender .

Also think of all the abuse and name calling workers get called in general... funny how they can still behave in a professional calm manner . But not this self entitled worker ,who wants to make a scene.

Also if I've read the headline correctly,it sounds like it's another worker getting offended on behalf of the trans person? . That's another thing that irritates me aswell .

Some coffee shops only take cards.
That suits me fine, I usually pay by card anyway.
