A writer for the Guardian has boycotted the newspaper for failing to tell its readers that a cat killer who murdered a stranger was transgender.

Scarlet Blake, a 26-year-old trans woman, was found guilty last week of murdering Jorge Martin Carreno in July 2021 on his way home from a night out, four months after Blake’s Netflix-inspired killing of a cat.

Louise Tickle, an award-winning journalist who has written for the Guardian for more than 20 years, has accused the newspaper of “deceiving its readers” for using the word “woman” in its headline and omitting the fact Blake was transgender in an article covering the case.

In a letter to Katharine Viner, the newspaper’s editor, Ms Tickle said: “I’ve contributed to the Guardian for nearly two and a half decades, but as a result of an utterly dismaying news piece published on Friday, I cannot do so again until I’m confident that the Guardian is able to demonstrate that its reporters, editors and management understand what constitutes a fact, and stops deceiving its readers.”

Ms Tickle explained that upon reading the article online last Friday, she was left unaware that Blake was a “male killer”.

“How could I?,” she said. “The headline used the word ‘woman’ and nowhere in the piece did I pick up any reference to the killer being transgender.

“My understanding is that I didn’t just miss the word ‘transgender’ – that word was not included in the piece.

“So, as far as I – and as far as any of your other readers were concerned that day – a woman had committed an extraordinarily depraved and sexually motivated murder of a man, after having carried out a hideous act of animal cruelty,” she added in the letter to Ms Viner.

‘It is disgraceful’
The journalist then claims that when she went back to look at the piece again the following day it had been changed; “the headline was altered to remove the word ‘woman’ and the word ‘transgender’ was added, in the fifth paragraph down (after references to ‘woman’ and ‘she’ in the text above).”

She added: “Many people will not read that far, and so Guardian readers are still being led to believe that a woman has committed this crime.”

Ms Tickle accused the newspaper of “actively deceiving readers into believing that there is a sudden upsurge in women engaged in violent, homicidal and sexually motivated criminality”.

“It is disgraceful. There is no excuse for it. Sometimes people suggest that the anger around this kind of factually inaccurate reporting is overblown, performative, unkind, or petty. It is not,” she wrote.

The thing about it is, these things have real life consequences, it's misrepresenting facts and causing statistics to be incorrect. Sexually motivated attacks are overwhelmingly male crimes and we need correct information around this so people can be protected properly

Its accurate and is not open to misleading people

It was way down, often people will read the headline only or the first paragraph so I don't think it is a coincidence that it features right at the end.


This type of reporting and indeed recording by the police is going go skew violence by women massively and will have consequences in the future, its bad enough now where violence against women and girls is not taken particularly seriously in a lot of court cases, wait until there is the argument that women count for more cases of violence against other women more than men

Sadly that's not all that unusual, I honestly doubt there'd have been jail time at all just for the cat-murder. There'd have been charges, certainly, but I doubt there'd have been a custodial sentence.

…I just don’t understand the sentencing of these things and how a life sentence can be a ‘minimum of 24 years…’…surely that’s one of the biggest problems in our justice system and why each case can’t be looked at individually …in this case, life should be life as the person has said that one day they’ll kill their parents…’I would murder my mum for you…I also want to kill my dad one day…maybe when they are old I can just put a respirator with pure nitrogen on their faces while they sleep…’….and yet, a minimum term of 24 years would mean this person was free to do just that to their parents…?…none of that intent is because of anything sexual or because something was watched on Netflix…this is someone who life should mean life for…forever, for the safety of all…

Mr Martin Carreno's family paid tribute to "an extraordinary being full of passion and kindness". He was one of three triplet brothers.

They said in a statement: "Today, his absence leaves a deep wound in our hearts. His life was stolen, cutting short his projects and dreams."

Mr Martin Carreno's mother added that her son "aspired to build a better world" and was an "incredibly good person".

wow i know it makes no difference to a murder but one of triplets...

Part of what makes it skew the statistics so badly is the tendency to completely ignore the physical reality of gender differences... people will flat out deny tat they're as big as they are.

Fact is, unless it's a particularly small/thin male and a particularly large and strong female (e.g. a heavy gym user) it's simply very unlikely that a female COULD successfully strangle an adult man to death with their bare hands. Yes they could sneak up on someone unawares and garrote them with a rope or cord, but not bare hands face to face. Literally almost impossible.

And that's before even going into the fact that extreme violence in general comes from biological males. It's important that we know and understand this. Skewing the stats for any reason is terrible.
