The bank said the post office should report it. I'm assuming they are doing so cos they took all my contact details and said that they'd get back to me ASAP.

Then you tell the post office by doing that they're assuming responsibility. That's it their error. If they thought you were trying to scam them by giving them back dodgy bank notes, they'd either report you, or say it's not their problem. They can make a claim on their insurance or whatever.

I'm surprised your bank allowed you to keep the notes. They should have confiscated them and followed their own procedures for counterfeit notes. They have an obligation to stop them being used elsewhere (you could have used them in a shop that doesn't check).

This link from ActionFraud tells you what you should do:
https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/bl...0force%20area.

If the post office report it, that means they're assuming responsibility maybe? But yeah, the bank most likely have to follow some kind of protocol when dealing with fake notes, even if you're just going into check them.

Kick up a fuss in the Post Office. That's what I would do.

Yes, the bank told me to go straight back to the post office with the notes, it's right across the road, 2 minutes walk away.

I got upset, and think they just wanted to get rid of me. I gave them all my contact details.

Draft article

They're at fault for having counterfeit money. So liable. They need to refund you.

If you present fake notes to a bank they are legally obliged to confiscate them not give you them back

"Possession of a counterfeit banknote

The Bank will then authenticate the banknote before forwarding all counterfeits to the
National Crime Agency for analysis. Counterfeit banknotes are worthless therefore no
reimbursement will be given unless the banknote submitted is subsequently found to be
genuine."

"The bank will complete a "Retention of Counterfeit Currency Form" and give
you a copy for your records."

….ouch, that must have been a pretty grim experience …I mean, it doesn’t help our faith in financial institutions and procedures that they’ve put in place themselves to protect those who bank with them… if the onus of proof is then going to be on you…you were given bad cash/prove it…?…wow, that’s as bad as the bad cash …being kicked twice, eh…sorry that you had to go through that, Kate….

You would expect banks and Post Offices to have robust procedures to ensure giving out fake notes did not happen, keep pestering Kate and get your money back, can you get in touch with your Universal Credit adviser to see if you can get an advance?

if you used a card terminal to get your cash, it's logged when you did the withdrawal. If it was at a cashpoint or in a post office, they will have video. I'm not absolutely certain, but i believe they also record the serial numbers of every note dispensed. So don't let them wriggle out of it

Yes I wouldn't give up. They're responsible for it. The money come from them.

Go contactless. Its safer all round.

I thought Banks were obliged to confiscate fake notes. There will definitely be evidence that you withdrew the notes on this date and at a certain time. It will also show on your bank statements.

I dont carry cash around at all. I may sometimes have a fiver on me if I know I'm going to an only cash store or takeaway but very seldom have any more than that on me.

the amount of notes in circulation is down dramatically since pre-covid so fake notes become much easier to test for, so there are many less in circulation

Default Always check your notes when drawing money out, I've been stung today!

I absolutely hate these new bendy , plastic notes as they just don’t fold well enough
