Default England cricket legend Graham Thorpe, 55 took his own life

This does not make sense.

[Graham Thorpe took his own life after
several years battling anxiety
and depression - believing his wife
and children were
'better off without him',
his bereft family revealed today.

The left-handed Surrey batsman,
a talisman for England and hero
for many who grew up watching cricket
in the 1990s, died aged just 55.

Mr Thorpe, a father-of-four,
was seriously ill in hospital
in May 2022 after trying to kill himself.
He made a recovery but took
his own life on Sunday.]

[Mrs Thorpe said today: 'Despite having a wife
and two daughters whom he loved and
who loved him, he did not get better.
He was so unwell in recent times
and he really did believe that
we would be better off without him
and we are devastated that he acted
on that and took his own life'.]

Was it a Money thing
that his wife and kids are better off
with him gone?

Better days 2007
[Graham would find love again
with his second wife Amanda.
Pictured here with their daughters
Kitty and Emma.

Thorpe is survived by her and his four children]

…depression/severe anxiety isn’t something that makes sense any more than other illnesses…some reports are saying that he suffered depression/anxiety for a few years and some are saying many years…but for however long, he obviously felt overwhelmed to the point of taking his own life…it’s very, very sad…

He made an attempt on his life back in 2022 apparently too.

His depression was obviously terrible and he saw no other way out.

Dreadfully sad - his poor family

I have fought against those very things since I was a teenager .. thankfully despite having many dark thoughts over the decades.. I never acted on them and they passed relatively fast .

Its so difficult to avoid feeling like this and real sad thing is that you get used to the dark times and they become the norm .

Genuinely sorry to hear that @Zizu.

I feel so sorry for Graham Thorpe, a big, strong man struggling with this dreadful disease. How awful for him to see no other way out. And how awful for his family.

…I’m so sorry what your own experience has been in terms of darker times but I’m glad that you’ve felt those times to have felt brief and you’ve experienced a balance of brightness again….…I think thats one of the things as well, when those times don’t feel ‘relatively fast’ and when someone feels as though they’re sinking and sinking and aren’t able to grip onto anything…and as you say, for some those feelings are difficult/impossible to avoid…and sadly, any type of coping skills are difficult/impossible to see or feel in those times as well…

How awful, I had thought he fell ill of natural causes a couple of years ago and his death would be linked to that but it turns out that severe depression just had a hold on him that whole time

Cricket can be a very difficult sport I think with the long tours away and the hyper focus on individuals. Only good news is a lot more players are talking about it these days
